How to Care for your Beautiful And Rare Extensions? Don't worry, we've got you!
Here are some helpful tips on how to care for your full cuticle virgin hair from BARE:
There is absolutely no doubt that full cuticle virgin hair is an investment and taking poper care of it should be your number one priority in order to get the best out of it. Please see the information below, we think you will find it very useful.
Please keep in mind that no two bundles of hair will be the same because each bundle comes from a different donor. As a result, some people may use certain products successfully where the hair responds favorably, while others may use the same products, but receive a different response. If you find that the latter is the case, discontinue use with those products and try a different regimen, and continue until you find one that works for your extensions.
The extensions you receive from BARE are all full cuticle, virgin hair, and as a result, the extensions will always respond favorably to a proper care regimen. The hair is premium quality and has simply been cut from the donors’ head, washed/cleansed and wefted.
Installation
It is highly recommended that when your extensions are being installed, whether on your head or on a wig cap, that the fold over method be used, using a blanket stitch method. Instruct your stylist, not to do any of the following:
- Pierce the wefts while sewing them onto your head/wig cap
- Cut the wefts- if they have to be cut, each piece must be sealed with a good weft sealer.
- Split the wefts, if this must be done, each piece must be sealed.
Post Installation
Once our extensions have been installed they must be maintained properly in order to get the best out the extensions. We believe in a very simple hair philosophy and that is; if you handle your extensions with care, they will be good to you.
Given that the extensions are now attached to wefts and not a human being’s scalp, there is no longer any direct supply of nutrients from the scalp to the strands of the extensions. As a result the extensions must be kept hydrated and moisturized by using natural oils and a little water (possibly mixed with a good light conditioner) when necessary.
Washing/Cleansing Your Extensions
It is important to have a hair care regimen that is consistent. Always try to cleanse your extensions at least once every two weeks, or once per week if you perspire in your hair, or has been in an environment that would cause your hair to be dirtier than usual. Do not over wash your extensions, meaning, do not wash them too often weekly, and when washing do not do too many washes. This may cause your extensions to become dry. It is also recommended to wash your extensions only when they start to become dull and lifeless.
Always detangle or brush your extensions with a demi tip brush or detangling brush before you wet them. This will limit the amount of breakage and tangling. Do not brush the hair or try to detangle the wet hair with a brush. It is best to use a wide tooth comb to detangle the hair while it is wet.
Sulfate free and/or organic products with a moisturizing component can be used. Do not over wash or use too much shampoo; about the size of a quarter (United States 25 cents) should be enough, about two - three times depending on how often you normally wash them.
Always wet the extensions, using warm water which will allow the cuticles to open up to allow nutrients from the shampoo and conditioner. Always shampoo the extensions gently in a downward motion, from root to tip. Section the hair to make it more manageable.
Use moisturizing conditioner, and rinse well. Use a small amount of some type of natural oil, such as olive, coconut, almond or any other type and at the very end rinse with very cold water. This will close the cuticles, locking in the moisturization and ensure that the extensions are left feeling smooth and soft and will maintain its natural sheen.
Co-Washing
A great alternative to a shampoo-conditioner regimen is using a co wash, which is just a cleansing conditioner. This is actually said to be far better than using shampoos of any type, because the conditioners actually perform double duty by moisturizing and cleansing the hair simultaneously, which leaves it feeling very soft and smooth. Not all cleansing conditioners will work for everyone. You will just have to try different types until you find one that works best with your extensions. Doing a co wash is usually highly recommended for curly textures since this texture tends to be naturally drier and frizzier after installation and wear for a little while, than with straight and wavy textures.
Deep Conditioning
Our extensions are very low maintenance, however sometimes they will need a little TLC, and more often than not when they have been chemically treated. Deep conditioning products such as those containing natural oils and ingredients are usually best, however remember not all organic or sulfate free products will work. Do a deep conditioning at least once every three weeks, or based on the needs of the hair. Saturate hair with warm water to open up the cuticles, apply deep conditioner and rinse with cold water to close the cuticles.
Moisturizing
It is extremely important to know and understand your hair extensions. Be able to recognize when it looks and feels drier than usual. In order to ensure that your extensions are kept hydrated and moisturized, apply a dime size portion of conditioner and natural oil to water (use spray bottle) and spritz evenly throughout your extensions. For curly textures, use a little more of the concoction than you would for straight and wavy textures, to ensure than the hair is evenly saturated and hydrated.
After cleansing, do not use any styling tools, or apply any heat to the extensions. Set them out to air dry, for example, overnight for best results.
Night Time Regimen
Always brush your extensions in the mornings before styling and at nights before you go to bed. This will help to keep the strands in tact running smoothly in one direction, hence it’s less likely to experiencing any tangling.
If your extensions are installed on your head always use a scarf/bonnet, preferably silk/satin to cover your head at nights. This will help to prevent frizzing, matting and tangling. If the hair is installed on a wig cap, remove the wig every night, brush gently and place on a wig head/ stand.
For curly/deep (wavy) textures, it is highly recommended to braid the hair in sections, and spray each braid with water, oil and conditioner concoction. This will help to maintain the wave/curl patterns and keep the hair hydrated and moisturized simultaneously.
